Belgian director Philippe Cortens' latest cinematic endeavor, 'Fred Van Hove: An Improvised Life,' exemplifies his dedication to showcasing the artistry and genius of Belgian legend Fred Van Hove - who we had the pleasure of hosting at OUT.FEST in 2013. Known for his radical and uncompromising approach to piano and for his pioneering contributions to improvised music and free jazz, Fred Van Hove's life is explored here in depth. Philippe takes viewers on a remarkable journey as he follows the then 81-year-old musician during the preparation for what would prove to be his final solo concert and a memorable duo performance with his longtime friend, Peter Brötzmann (who has unfortunately very recently passed away as well).

This documentary is a treasure trove of unearthed footage and features insightful interviews with key figures in Fred Van Hove's life, including his wife, Mie Van Cakenberghe, fellow musicians such as Sven-Åke Johansson, Cel Overberghe, Walter Hus, Els Vandeweyer or Peter Brötzmann.
